The English first inhabited Antigua in 1632, and following a period of self-rule it finally gained full independence on 1 November 1981. Antigua and Barbuda consists of the islands of Antigua, Barbuda and Redond. Antigua forms part of the Leeward Islands which lie in the eastern Caribbean. The economy is centred around tourism.
